WHAT IS POLY B?
Polybutylene pipe was installed between 1973 – 1999 and is a grey, flexible water pipe.
Besides the fact that Poly B leaks, it may also impact your homeowners’ insurance. Some companies have increased water claim deductibles to $10,000 if you have Poly B in your home, and other companies will not offer any coverage to homes with Poly B.
The damage caused by a flood and the time wasted dealing with insurance companies far outweighs the cost of replacement.

Poly-B is Very Risky – the chlorine from your tap water reacts with the pipes, causing the pipes to be brittle, making it easy for them to crack or leak.
Poly-B Deteriorates from Within – It’s hard to tell from the outside if your Poly-B pipes are about to fail. The erosion works from the inside out. It’s best to replace the pipes, even if they look okay from the outside. You never know when they’re about to crack and leak. Most homes that have Poly-B have had them for over 20 years, and that’s beyond its lifespan.

I had what they call Poly B piping in my townhouse - a piping from the mid-90's that's known to be defective. As I understand the problem, the combination of hot/cold water, water pressure and, chlorine in our water, over time, WILL erode and the pipe from the inside out causing slight pinhole leaks and slight fissure cracks leaving mold and leaks to the point when one day it all comes through the ceiling... The plumbing is bad enough but mold you do not want! - too late by that point!I found Tap2Drain by a Google search and they claimed to be Poly B experts. It seems they all claim to be BUT, in Tap2Drain's case, they truly turned out to be just that. Most plumbers can replace piping but where this company stands tall is their connection with a drywaller (Mudmasters) where Tap2Drain handle EVERYTHING from start to finish including the drywall work.Why was them handling everything from start to finish it so important? - it's because most drywallers are so busy that they aren't interested in small jobs like this so it's very difficult to find a drywaller that will agree to take on the work. Then there's the dreaded time between sanding and this is where the problem mounts - because your job is so small, you're the bottom rung on the ladder and it may take a week or two or even longer in between sanding's. So, it could take weeks to do a job that should only take two days with the plumber and 6 days for the drywaller.Stephen (the owner) and his team were awesome. Tap 2 Drain was contracted to completely remove the existing Poly-B piping from our house and replace it entirely with PEX. The Poly-B was at the end of its lifespan and a significant danger to the rancher.
From start to finish, initial inspection and quote to final installation and testing, Tap 2 Drain was outstanding in every way. Leanne, at the office, wrangled permits and inspectors whenever necessary. Steve coordinated and performed the work. He and his assistant put in 3 solid days of demanding effort to completely replace the plumbing and bring everything up to code.
All of this was done at the start of the COVID-19 lock-down. Steve and his assistant scrupulously observed all precautions while working in the house and communicating with us in person.
Throughout it all, Steve and Leanne were always there to explain, to provide assistance, and to reassure, no matter the issue. As of this writing, our new plumbing functions perfectly. The permits have been closed and all the inspections by the city passed.

How do I know if I have Poly B pipes?
If your home was built between the early 70’s and early 90’s, they were most likely built using Poly B piping systems. At the time it was a cheaper solution to copper pipes.
Poly B is a gray plastic pipe used as a water supply line. If your pipes are grey, chances are they are Poly B
Why do I need to replace Poly B?
Poly B was removed from the National Plumbing Code as of 2005, after many Poly B water systems experienced leaks, cracks and irregular water pressure.
Poly B pipes are known to leak and crack, and can cause major damage to your home.
Many insurance companies will not insure houses with Poly B, or will charge exorbitant rates and/or deductibles if they do cover your property.
How long does it take to replace them?
Most Poly B replacements take between 2 and 5 days for the repipe, depending on the size of the home. We can give you a better idea once we talk to you and our Poly B specialist takes a look at your home.
If you opt to have the drywall done through our company, it takes 8-10 days.
How much damage is done to my walls?
We do not tear out whole walls. We use templates and make concise holes where we do the work, and the drywall we remove can be used to repair the wall. Most holes are less than 24 inches wide.
Do you repair the drywall after?
We have a drywall company we work with, and we can give you a quote for the repairs at the time of the quote for the Poly B replacement.
Do we have to leave while the repairs are being done? Will we have water?
You do not need to leave, and our technicians make sure you have water overnight.
