Ways to Fix a Dishwasher That’s Not Draining

When your dishwasher isn’t draining properly, it can be a real pain. Water can start to build up in the tub, making it difficult (and even dangerous) to use. In most cases, a dishwasher that isn’t draining properly is due to a clog in the drain line or pump. If your dishwasher isn’t draining properly, there are a few quick and easy fixes you can try before calling a professional plumber.

6 Steps to Fix a Dishwasher That Will Not Drain

  1. Check the Drain Line for Clogs

The first step is to check the drain line for clogs. The drain line is the hose that carries water from the dishwasher to the sink. If this hose is clogged, it will prevent water from draining properly. To check the drain line, remove it from the dishwasher and check for blockages. If you find any, clear them out and reattach the hose.

  1. Clean the Dishwasher Filter

A dirty dishwasher filter can also prevent proper drainage. Most dishwashers have a self-cleaning cycle that will clean the filter, but you can also clean it manually. To do this, remove the filter and wash it with warm, soapy water. Be sure to rinse it thoroughly before putting it back in place.

  1. Check for Food Particles in the Dishwasher Pump

Another common cause of dishwashers not draining properly is food particles clogging up the pump. The pump is located under the dishwasher spray arm and is responsible for circulating water during the wash cycle. To check for food particles, remove the spray arm and look for any buildup around the pump blades. If you see any, use a toothpick or other sharp object to dislodge them.

  1. Inspect the Dishwasher Float

The float is a small device located inside the dishwasher that regulates how much water can enter during each cycle. A float that is stuck in the “up” position will prevent water from draining properly. To inspect the float, open up your dishwasher and locate it near the bottom of the tub. If it is stuck, try gently pushing it down until it pops back up again. If this doesn’t work, you may need to replace the float assembly altogether.

  1. Check for Leaks

Leaks can also cause your dishwasher to fail to drain properly by preventing water from entering the tub in the first place. To check for leaks, run your dishwasher through a full cycle and then open it up and inspect all of its components for signs of leaking (e.g., wet spots on hoses or connections). If you find any leaks, tighten fittings or replace hoses as needed until they are no longer leaking.

  1. Replace Worn Parts

In some cases, worn-out parts may be causing your dishwasher to fail to drain properly.. To diagnose this problem, you will need to consult your owner’s manual and locate your appliance’s schematic diagram.. Once you have done this, inspect all of the parts listed on the diagram for signs of wear and tear (e.g., cracks, fraying). If you find any worn parts, replace them with new ones.
